Ask Lisa – Tips for Home Organizing

Joanne Asked

You have shown how you organize all your Christmas stuff, and I love how you do it! I need help in the bathroom with my face, hair and body STUFF! What can you recommend that looks nice and is a great storage solution? I live in a ranch without a basement and my mom is moving in with me…so I think this is a great time to reorganize. Any suggestions are appreciated!!!!

Hi Joanne,

I think every woman realizes that storage needs will always be more than whatever space we have. I need to become more organized in my own bathroom as well!

I am not sure of the configuration of your bathroom but I thought these ideas might help.

The space under the sink is more space than you think if you use it all. The best idea would be to be able to put 2 or 3 sliding shelves under the sink so you can make use of the vertical space and get to things easily that are in the back. This may take some figuring and a handyman, (you have to work around the pipes), but the principle would be the same as this example in the kitchen:

A simpler idea is a sliding shelf on the bottom of the space. This would keep it from interfering with the pipes underneath and be easier installation. It would allow you to reach things easily all the way to the back, as you would be pulling them out. But it would not take advantage of the vertical space.

The inside of any door is a good place to add storage as well. If you have a linen closet in or near your bathroom you can hang an organizer on the inside of the door like this one:

If you only have a few cabinet doors, don’t waste them. You can find things that hang over the door so you don’t have to drill holes in your cabinets.

Bed, Bath & Beyond

It is a good time to go through and throw away anything that is expired, as well as any color cosmetics that are old or you just don’t love. If you don’t love it, you won’t wear it. Keeping it because you hate to throw it away doesn’t save you money if you’re never going to use it anyway! (Talking to myself on that one).

Good luck with the organizing Joann, I hope that helps!
