“I have recently experienced what I would formally diagnosed as an attack of insanity; that is, I have purchased a small farm,” Pierre du Pont wrote to a friend in 1906. However, he added, “I expect to have a good deal of enjoyment in restoring its former condition and making it a place where I can entertain my friends.”
What an understatement! In the years that followed he devoted a large amount of his time and resources to making Longwood Gardens one of the most beautiful places on earth. It reflects his love of horticulture and architecture.
It is now one of the great treasures for everyone to enjoy, rivaling the famous gardens in Europe. The Orchid Extravaganza is ending this weekend, and it is spectacular. I loved it so much I wanted to share it. Once again, I did not edit too heavily. There are just so many beautiful pictures 🙂
